In the future, no one will thrive alone. The old-style ethic of individualism and isolation gives way to co-evolution, and innovation blurs all the old boundaries. In this session, Leanne Kaiser Carlson explores what is happening now as innovators rethink their enemies, play in a flat world, synthesize ideas and partners that seem oppositional, engage philanthropic allies, and rapidly learn and gain advantage together. She will help us to understand the emerging business ecosystems and bold strategies by which to flourish.
Leanne Kaiser Carlson is a futurist exploring the world we will soon enter. She advises CEOs and philanthropists on healthcare strategies and trends and she teaches, writes and serves as a hospital trustee. Leanne has reviewed the innovation strategies for hundreds of health systems across the United States and is exploring ways to nurture innovation to design new approaches to healthcare transformation. Leanne is a Senior Fellow of the Estes Park Institute in the areas of Health Futures, Innovation, and Wisdom Cultures and serves as core faculty of the Spiritual Leadership Institute. She directs the Kaiser Institute’s Program in Philanthropy and works extensively with organizations seeking to attract entrepreneurially oriented philanthropists.

Atul Gawande, MD, Professor, Author, Practicing Surgeon
As a practicing surgeon and an accomplished writer, teacher and speaker, Dr. Atul Gawande offers a unique perspective on the practice of medicine, the reform of healthcare and the human struggle to improve performance. He received the MacArthur Fellowship, popularly known as the "genius prize," for his writing and his efforts to improve surgical practice. Dr. Gawande is one of the most influential voices on healthcare reform in America today. With the sensible and pragmatic approach of a surgeon, he encourages incremental reforms that build on the strengths and limitations of our current system. He also speaks on how to improve care and lower costs.
Dr. Gawande holds distinguished positions in all of his professional roles. In addition to his surgical duties, he is an assistant professor of surgery and public health, and a staff writer for The New Yorker magazine. He also is a columnist for The New England Journal of Medicine. He leads the World Health Organization’s global campaign to reduce avoidable deaths and complications in surgery. Dr. Gawande is the author of two books on medicine, culture and human experience. His latest, Better: A Surgeon’s Notes on Performance, uses the high stakes challenges he faces as a surgeon to explore the universal struggle to perform well – what it takes to excel in any area of human endeavor. His previous book, Complications, was a finalist for the National Book Award in 2002 and is published in more than 100 countries.

Odditude: Finding passion in what you do

John Powers, Author, Communications Expert
John Powers stands out as one of the best in the business. His entire career has centered on effective communication. He created and hosted a PBS series on how to be an effective public speaker and has hosted several interview specials for PBS. Powers has been a guest on hundreds of radio and television shows, including Oprah and Today, and has received two Emmy awards for his work in television. Powers created and produced the Broadway musical, Do Black Patent Leather Shoes Really Reflect Up?, which is currently playing in over a dozen cities. He is the author of four best-selling books, including Junk Drawer, Corner Store, Front Porch Blues. His most recent book is Odditude (finding the passion for who you are and what you do). In 1988, he founded the Powers of Motivation Institute and since then has worked with over 1,000 major corporations and national associations to provide programs on how to succeed in a changing world. Powers earned a PhD in Communications from Northwestern University and was a professor of Speech and Performing Arts at Northeastern Illinois University.

This respected healthcare expert offers insights into how federal and local governments, physicians, hospitals, employers, private insurers and individuals must work together to create viable reform that will transform healthcare for all Americans. Action items that healthcare leaders must address when they return home to their communities will be offered.

Whether we work in the lab, on the computer or at the bedside, our shared ultimate goal as healthcare administrators is to care for patients in a way that improves community health efficiently, effectively and safely. In this session, hear perspectives on the patient experience, discussion of what works well, what we can do better and a vision for a transformed future that puts patients first.
Actress Lorraine Bracco is committed to promoting awareness of women’s heart disease, prevention, and treatment as a spokesperson for the American Heart Association’s “Go Red for Women” movement. Her multifaceted performances in all arenas have earned her a global fan base. Bracco played psychiatrist Dr. Jennifer Melfi who treated New Jersey Mafia heavyweight “Tony Soprano” on HBO’s hit series, The Sopranos. Her concise, understated portrayal earned her multiple Emmy, Golden Globe, and Screen Actors Guild Award Nominations for Best Actress in a TV Drama. In addition, Bracco was nominated for an Academy Award for her performance as a mobster’s wife in Goodfellas. Bracco was recently named “Woman of the Year” by the New York City Police Athletic League. In addition, she has launched her own line of wines, Bracco Wines and is the author of the national bestseller, On the Couch. She continues in her capacity as a member of the Board of Directors of an environmental organization called Riverkeeper.
