Premier Research Services
Premier, Inc. - Health Services Research
Premier, Inc. Health Services Research is organized into two areas:
- Research that supports, refines, and promotes new and existing Premier, Inc. products
- Research we pursue in collaboration with external organizations
The former category includes studies identifying new data elements, modeling techniques and specifications to refine and enhance our risk-adjustment methodologies. Projects in this area have produced the Select Practice Performance Standards, the Premier, Inc. |CareScience Top Performer Hospital Reports, and the latest version of our risk-adjustment model that features greater out-of-sample prediction power. Other projects include our Project Osler Delphi Panels of physicians to refine our Decision Theoretic Complication Model and exploring new ways of using procedure information to model and capture patient severity.
Premier, Inc. has a long history of commissioned and collaborative research with external organizations, including nationally recognized think tanks, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, hospitals and health systems, Pharmaceutical and biotech companies, healthcare industry associations, and news organizations. Our research has been featured in peer-reviewed journals as well as in various industry publications and newspapers.

Project Osler
Named for Sir William Osler, Project Osler is a tool used in the CareScience Risk Adjustment Methodology to collect clinical knowledge. The methodology is used to evaluate patient populations based on a mixture of statistical modeling and clinical knowledge. Project Osler takes advantage of the Internet to maintain and advance a clinical knowledge database that is used to continually improve our analytical models. The site is dedicated to gathering input from medical experts on a regular basis and helps Premier, Inc. to:
- assemble panels of qualified experts to participate in targeted Delphi forums
- promote open discussions about ongoing research and validation
