Statement on MedPAC recommendations for hospital payment updates by Blair Childs, senior vice president of public affairs, Premier healthcare alliance

January 12, 2012

The Premier healthcare alliance strongly opposes MedPAC's recommendation to level payment for evaluation and management (E&M) services across sites. Even though MedPAC moderated its draft recommendation, we are extremely concerned about the impact this proposal will have on all hospitals, but especially those that serve as a safety net for vulnerable Medicare beneficiaries, as well as integrated health systems and academic medical centers. If adopted, this recommendation will significantly stall movement toward health system integration and coordination of care, which represent the main approach for reducing costs and improving quality without harming access for patients.

Statement on MedPAC draft recommendations for hospital payment updates by Blair Childs, senior vice president of Public Affairs, Premier healthcare alliance

December 15, 2011

The Premier healthcare alliance is disappointed that the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission (MedPAC) is considering two proposals that would put hospital care in jeopardy. With hospital Medicare margins projected at -7.0 in 2012 and more reimbursement and sequestration cuts ahead, hospitals are already operating under tremendous financial challenges. A full marketbasket update is a minimum step to ensure that hospitals have the financial resources needed to continue providing highest quality patient care, while serving as a significant source of employment in their communities.
