As the
market leader in aerosol delivery and asthma-related devices, Monaghan
Medical Corporation has achieved widespread recognition for their delivery
of innovative products assisting with asthma management. Since the company’s
founding in 1980, its reach has grown consistently – a success supported in
part through Monaghan’s relationship with group purchasing organizations (GPOs),
including Premier, Inc.
Monaghan signed their first contract with Premier in July 1996. “This was our first GPO contract, and it has led to a successful business relationship over the last 10 years,” said Jon Schoeler, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Monaghan.
Since the company began working with Premier, it has had multiple opportunities to introduce new products to Premier member hospitals in need of top-quality asthma care devices. “Premier has been a valuable business partner and has allowed a company of Monaghan’s size advantageous access to Premier members,” said Schoeler. “Our business with Premier members continues to grow.”
In 2003, Premier awarded a “breakthrough technology” contract to Monaghan for its AeroEclipse® BAN, an advanced drug delivery device that pumps medication into the lungs as the individual breathes. This was Monaghan’s first GPO contract on this product. By partnering with Premier, Monaghan was able to share their innovation with Premier’s 1,700 member hospitals, thereby attracting a great deal of interest in this new way to deliver asthma medication. In addition to the AeroEclipse® BAN, Monaghan has provided several other new products to hospitals during the last few years through its Premier contract. “These additions have been of significant assistance in maintaining our market share with Premier members,” said Schoeler.
Given the nature of Monaghan’s aerosol drug delivery devices and asthma management products, sales are a function of hospital occupancy. Therefore, access to large GPO hospital networks has been extremely beneficial. By working with GPOs, Monaghan has been able to supply hundreds of hospitals with its products, easing naturally occurring revenue fluctuations and keeping business running smoothly.
Additionally, the partnership with Premier has allowed member hospitals the ability to utilize the support of many specialized sales representatives who distribute Monaghan products, essentially increasing the company’s sales team by almost two hundred individuals.
