Anticoagulation therapy and the 2008 Joint Commission National Patient Safety Goals

“Anticoagulation is a high risk treatment, which commonly leads to adverse drug events due to the complexity of dosing these medications, monitoring their effects and ensuring patient compliance with outpatient therapy.”  -- The Joint Commission

On January 23, 2008, Premier conducted an educational webcast to discuss The Joint Commission’s 2008 National Patient Safety Goals for anticoagulation therapy. Speakers will reviewed The Joint Commission markers that have been set for the planning, developing and tracking of milestones through calendar year 2008; and overviewed the implementation of the required January 1, 2009 anticoagulation protocols.

Presentations from member healthcare facilities with established anticoagulation programs followed the Joint Commission overview. Speakers highlighted the anticoagulation issues previously faced in their hospitals and how, through the development of new programs, they have been able to improve the quality of patient care by decreasing the risk of adverse events. An interactive Q&A session concluded the webcast.
