Challenge:
- A proactive approach to implement processes to reduce length of stay (LOS) and cost of care while maintaining the highest quality of care
- Data highlighted opportunity, but facility lacked process management for long-term sustainable results
Solution:
- Partnered with Premier to highlight improvement areas using ClinicalAdvisor and created an enhancement plan with specific targets to achieve desired results
- Conducted detailed LOS analysis utilizing comparative data, provided onsite leadership support
- Provided onsite implementation assistance – refocused case management, began nursing "huddles," utilization review and other strategies to reduce LOS and resource utilization
- Engaged physicians by providing individualized performance activity reports that highlighted LOS, resource utilization opportunities and quality outcomes along with improvements recommendations
Results:
- Significantly reduced LOS in four months; continuing to decrease over a full year
- Now launching Phase 2 to reduce LOS by an additional 0.3 days.
- Annualized cost savings: $2.5 million (calculated using $350 as the cost/day savings)
