Premier is pleased to be a "supporting partnership organization" in the Surgical Care Improvement Project (SCIP), a national quality improvement project designed to improve surgical care in hospitals. Premier has pledged to participate in SCIP by:

What is SCIP?

SCIP is a multi-year national campaign and partnership of leading public and private healthcare organizations aimed at reducing surgical complications by 25 percent by the year 2010. SCIP is sponsored by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) in collaboration with a number of other national partners serving on the steering committee, including the American Hospital Association (AHA), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) and others. SCIP is an extension of a previous CMS initiative called the Surgical Infection Prevention Project (SIPP). Premier has been a member of both the SIPP and SCIP expert panels, as well as a supporting partner organization.

    • Participation is voluntary; however, many of the measures are components of measures being collected by other initiatives, including the Hospital Quality Alliance (HQA), Premier's HQID, JCAHO core measures, and CMS's 8th Scope of Work, American College of Surgeons initiative (ASC/NSQIP), IHI's 5 million lives, IHI's 5 million lives, and Premier's own data tools (eg (Quality Advisor).

  4. SCIP measurement information forms or specifications can be accessed at:

    SCIP specifications, or measure information forms contain information relevant to each measure, such as the definition, rationale, included and excluded populations, and data elements. The references used to support the measure and the algorithm used to determine the numerator and denominator for each measure are included.

What can consumers and patients do now?

Millions of people have surgery every year. Every surgery has risks, but there are some that can be prevented. If you doctors and nurses follow some simple steps you will have a shorter and safer hospital stay.
