Premier continues to add new measures to help QUEST members face the challenges ahead while preparing for future policies and payment cuts. 

What is QUEST?

QUEST, comprised of more than 290 hospitals across 38 states, is the most comprehensive hospital collaborative in the nation committed to measuring, comparing and scaling innovative solutions for the complex task of caring for patients. Its structure to help hospitals:

• Save Lives – Eliminate avoidable hospital mortalities
• Safely reduce the cost of care – Reduce costs for each patient’s hospitalization
• Deliver the most reliable and effective care – Ensure that patients receive all appropriate evidence-based care
• Improve patient safety – Prevent incidents of harm, including healthcare conditions and healthcare-associated infections and birth injuries
• Improve patient experience – Improve the patient’s overall care and reinforce loyalty to the care providing facility
• Reduce readmissions - Improve care coordination across the continuum to avoid preventable readmissions

Have QUEST members seen improvement?

In three years time, QUEST has achieved remarkable results, and participating hospitals are outperforming national averages to save an estimated 24,820 lives and $4.5 billion. If all hospitals were able to achieve these results, estimates show that an additional 87,250 lives and $34 billion could be saved.

Why join QUEST?

QUEST is hospitals’ insurance policy for healthcare reform. It targets the needs of all patients and has made great strides in driving improvements to evidence-based care, cost of care, patient satisfaction, harm and mortality. Specifically, QUEST hospitals will be more likely to:

• Earn 1%-2% Medicare incentive payments as part of the value-based purchasing program (VBP)
• Avoid up to 3% of Medicare payment penalties for high readmission rates
• Avoid 2% Medicare payment penalty under value-based purchasing (VBP) for hospital-acquired conditions (HACs)
• Avoid being fined 1% of payments for high rates of hospital-acquired conditions (HACs)
• Better manage the $197.2 billion in reimbursement cuts over the next decade.

As policymakers struggle to find practical solutions that improve healthcare quality and control spending, hospitals participating in the Premier healthcare alliance's QUEST collaborative have committed to taking the steps necessary to save lives, safely reduce the cost of care, deliver the most reliable and effective care, improve patient safety and increase patient satisfaction simultaneously.

• participate in 90-day, rapid performance improvement challenges called “sprints.”
