Introduction
The Premier Safety Institute is collaborating with Practice Greenhealth and its Healthcare Clean Energy Exchange (HCEE) to lead the first large-scale healthcare reverse auction for energy. The Web-based electronic energy auction is designed to help healthcare facilities secure the best possible price in their procurement of energy (electricity and natural gas) and environmental commodities (renewable energy certificates and carbon offsets), lock in more stable pricing and increase their percentage of green/renewable energy purchases.

Participation in the reverse auction for energy procurement is risk free, that is, after reviewing the pricing at the end of the auction there is no requirement to purchase energy. There is also no cost to participate. A date for the reverse auction is scheduled for each participating facility.
Which healthcare facilities should consider participating
in a reverse auction?
- Interested in on energy procurement
- Located in a deregulated electricity or natural gas market (see table of competitive markets below) AND current energy contracts expiring in the next 12 months
- Located in any state AND interested in purchasing renewable energy credits or carbon offset credits

Market & Opportunity Assessment
If you have an interest in participating in this risk free, no cost reverse auction for the purchase of electricity and/or natural gas, and your facility is located in a state where either gas or electricity is deregulated, the Healthcare Clean Energy Exchange can assist you in determining your opportunities.
As noted in the table, there are 17 states (including DC) with deregulated electric markets that could benefit from a reverse auction. These include: CA, CT, DC, DE, IL, MA, MD, ME, MT, NH, NJ, NY, OH, OR, PA, RI, TX. Natural gas is deregulated in most states and renewable energy and environmental commodities are available in all states. You should consider participating if both of these apply:
- Facility located in a state with deregulated electricity and/or natural gas market; and
- Energy contracts expiring in the next 12 months
To start the process and have HCEE assess your local market and potential opportunities, simply provide some basic information about your energy use, by completing the Data Collection & Opportunity Assessment form. Once this information is reviewed by Practice Greenhealth/Heathcare Clean Energy Exchange, we will provide you with information on the opportunities for your healthcare facility/system and recommend next steps.
