On November 16, 2015, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released a final rule establishing a new bundled payment program for lower extremity joint replacement procedures called the Comprehensive Care for Joint Replacement (CJR) model. This new payment model will be mandatory for hospitals in 67 geographic regions for a five-year performance period, beginning April 1, 2016, and ending December 31, 2020.
