Premier and the Patient ID Coalition issued recommendations calling for Congress to lift the ban on the development and implementation of a national strategy for patient identity and matching. The lack of an actionable national patient identifier and matching strategy hampers safe, secure and efficient electronic exchange of health data. According to research, as many as one in five patients may be improperly linked to the wrong medical record, a patient safety nightmare just waiting to happen. In addition, the lack of national strategy creates myriad challenges for the national effort to roll out a COVID-19 vaccine, which will require matching two doses of the same vaccine to the same patient within a defined window of time. It’s time to move beyond narrow interpretations of archaic laws that prevent forward movement to address patient safety and quality of care issues. We urge the Senate to follow the House of Representatives lead and repeal the ban on federal funding for patient ID standards that would help improve the nation’s pandemic response and overall public safety.
