As the national leader in combating drug price increases and drug shortages, we applaud new research examining this issue from the American Hospital Association, the Federation of American Hospitals and the American Society of Health System Pharmacists.
We know that when manufacturers go through the competitive group purchasing organization (GPO) process, we keep price increases to less than half the average industry inflation rate. However, in non-competitive markets, manufacturers can bypass GPOs, producing price increases documented in the report. This is why Premier has been a staunch advocate for competitive markets.
We have also been leaders in working to end drug shortages, recently announcing an expanded program to ensure providers have continuous and affordable access to medications.
We will continue to work with the Administration and Congress to seek common sense policy solutions to this problem, including removing regulatory barriers to market entry, streamlining and standardizing the drug approval process, alleviating issues around access to active pharmaceutical ingredients used in manufacturing and improving inter-agency coordination.
