Premier and our members applaud the Biden Administration for today announcing new plans to better coordinate and expand genomic sequencing for COVID-19 test samples.
As Premier and members of our COVID-19 Testing Advisory Panel noted in a recent editorial, greater sequencing is needed to help our nation get ahead of viral variants and better manage treatment for novel cases. Since December 2020, the U.S. has sequenced about 0.3% of individuals testing positive for Covid-19, with wide variation between states. With added funding and coordination across organized hubs, we are hopeful that we can expand the rate of sequencing to better understand which variants are affecting patients, how they are spread and how to improve clinical practice and treatment.
