By Blair Childs, Senior Vice President of Public Affairs, Premier
Premier healthcare alliance applauds HHS’ and SAMHSA’s continued commitment to improve care coordination for those affected by substance use disorders. The final rule opens the door to driving greater access to substance use treatment records, which can mean life or death to millions of Americans and can help save the U.S. healthcare system an estimated $11.3 billion annually.
The COVID-19 public health emergency places new urgency on the need for healthcare providers to have a complete picture of their patients’ health to effectively target interventions. The next critical step for HHS is to expeditiously implement the Protecting Jessica Grubbs Legacy Act, which was included in the CARES Act earlier this year. This will help ensure full parity and equity for those dealing with substance use disorders while strengthening privacy protections.
