Members of the Premier alliance commend House Energy and Commerce Chairman Greg Walden (R-OH), Ranking Member Frank Pallone (D-NJ) and Rep. Tim Murphy (R-PA) for their leadership in combating the opioid epidemic. Addressing misuse and overuse of opioids requires the reliable implementation of evidence-based treatment practices and new performance measures and care processes.
Premier has been working with health systems, the government and other industry organizations to educate clinicians, define new performance measures, and measurably reduce adverse drug events related to the use of opioids. Specifically, Premier has published peer-reviewed research on the effective use of opioids and steps to prevent adverse events, worked with hospitals to measurably reduce variation in care and improve pain management, and developed benchmarks on appropriate prescribing practices in the emergency department. We are also working with federally-owned hospitals to implement an opioid alerting and management system using clinical surveillance analytics. These efforts are referenced on the Premier Safety Institute website, one of the top resource centers for opioid safety best practices.
Premier will continue to expand this work with its network of nearly 80 percent of America’s health systems. We look forward to continuing work with our members, and sharing proven results with members of the Committee as they seek new ways to address this growing threat.
