Premier healthcare alliance enhances electronic contract catalog with additional "green" search capabilities

Premier's Supply Chain Advisor now allows hospitals to more easily identify environmentally preferred purchasing contracts to help improve environmental health, reduce costs

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (July 26, 2010) – To help its member hospitals improve environmental health and reduce costs, the Premier healthcare alliance has enhanced Supply Chain Advisor® (SCA), its electronic contract catalog.

SCA is a Web-based system that allows Premier member healthcare organizations to identify and select products and services, and uncover cost savings opportunities. By enhancing SCA, Premier members can now more easily identify environmentally preferred purchasing (EPP) contracts through EPP key word search capabilities such as compostable, organic, energy-efficient, and recycled; and a "green" icon to highlight the contracts that feature green attributes, such as third-party certifications or waste reduction.

"Alliance members look to Premier for contracts that provide safer and less toxic products, reduce waste, and help decrease greenhouse gas emissions and increase energy efficiency," said Gina Pugliese, RN, MS, vice president of the Premier Safety Institute®. "We pledge responsiveness to our members that are committed to greening their organizations. We also recognize that identification of greener products is an ongoing process as we learn more about safer options that positively impact the environment." 

Director of Premier's Environmental Purchasing Program Kellie McNelis said, "SCA is updated regularly and Premier meets with suppliers at events such as its annual Breakthroughs Conference to collect additional EPP information on specific attributes such as compliance with California's volatile organic compound regulations. By making it easier for hospitals to find green products in our catalog, they are able to advance environmental health for their patients, staff and communities."

Premier and 61 member hospitals recently received national recognition for environmental excellence from Practice Greenhealth – firmly establishing the Premier alliance as leaders in healthcare and setting the bar in the industry for commitment to EPP and green healthcare practices.

Premier was honored with the "Champion for Change" award from Practice Greenhealth for the eighth year in a row for its GreenHealthy® environmental leadership program led by Premier's EPP program and the Premier Safety Institute.
