The Wall Street Journal: Susan DeVore: Blood and blood products are crucial, lifesaving commodities used in a wide range of medical procedures, including surgeries and trauma care. But while blood can save lives, it can also increase risk for adverse outcomes, including allergic reactions, lung injuries and even death. At the same time, blood and blood products are extremely expensive, costing upward of $1,000 per unit when accounting for all direct and indirect costs—expenses that just may end up on a hospital bill depending on the patient’s insurance plan and deductibles.
