Under Medicare, physicians are paid based on Relative Value Units (RVUs) that are associated with weights that reflect the associated resource use for furnishing the service and are updated each January 1. The RVUs are broken into three categories: physician work, practice expense and malpractice expense. Each RVU is adjusted by a geographic practice cost index (GPCI) to reflect regional differences in the cost of practicing medicine and then multiplied times the conversion factor (set dollar amount) to yield the payment amount. Payments are made for both professional services and the technical component if furnished in a physician’s office rather than a hospital or other location.
