Premier’s Emergency Department Safety Initiative worked to improve patient care and satisfaction in the ED through consistent, accurate and timely diagnosis and treatment of high-risk ED patients.
Our collaborative helped teams manage patients coming to the ED with chest and abdominal pain, two of the most difficult and nonspecific diagnoses, and most commonly associated with more severe outcomes like heart attacks, appendicitis, meningitis and pancreatitis.
Started by 14 members of American Excess Insurance Exchange (AEIX), RRG, the collaborative improved outcomes and reduced liability claims using data and information from more than 730,000 annual ED visits, admissions and discharges.
Members worked together to develop quality improvement plans, and got the tools and support they need to implement those plans.
Members shared best practices for managing these potentially high-risk patients, with the ultimate goals of:
- Reducing costs
- Improving patient care
- Improving patient satisfaction
- Reducing clinical practice variation
- Delivering better outcomes in the ED
AEIX, an excess professional liability insurer, funded and developed the Emergency Department Safety Initiative. Premier Insurance Management Services, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Premier, provides contracted management services for AEIX.
