Premier Statement on Presidential Executive Order to Secure America’s Critical Supply Chains

Today’s Presidential executive order calls for a comprehensive review of the U.S. supply chain for pharmaceuticals and active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) – an action Premier supports. For years, Premier and our members have raised the alarm bells about our nation’s overreliance on foreign manufacturing. We’ve advocated to shine light in traditionally obscure areas, including the source of raw materials and finished goods.
Without upstream and downstream visibility into the pharmaceutical supply chain, we remain vulnerable to supply disruptions. To strengthen the U.S. supply chain, we must deepen our understanding of our foreign reliance on manufacturing as well as our ability to respond to export bans, manufacturing shutdowns, future global pandemics and more. Hand in hand with this work, we must have greater transparency into supply sources, raw materials and ancillary products, including specific data on volumes produced in each nation.
Premier also supports the administration’s recognition that private sector input will be essential as part of this endeavor. We remain committed to working alongside the administration to execute this executive order and to sharing our decades of expertise on the intricate nature of the pharmaceutical supply chain – and proven methods to diversify the global supply chain.
