Statement on CMS Innovation Center Direct Contracting Announcement

By Blair Childs, Senior Vice President, Public Affairs

Premier welcomes the opportunity to provide input to the Center for Medicare & Medicare Innovation (CMMI) on the redesign of the Direct Contracting Model as it suspends additional participation in the model. We’ve taken lessons learned from years of experience working with healthcare providers in alternative payment models and offered recommendations to refine the program in order to move the needle on value-based care. CMMI should use this time to improve the model so that providers are better suited to be the accountable entity.

This is greater reason for CMMI to build on the successes of the Next Generation ACO (NGACO) Model by scaling the program to expand the number of providers that can take on a high level of risk.
